2-Point Hanger | ``Y-Hanger`` | Epsilon – Approach 1 (Rope Only)
2-Point techniques can be used to
- Attach to two different straps.
- Attach to two different points on the same strap.
Note: I run the rope the direction I do to be consistent with how I teach the Somerville Bowline Single Column. It’s perfectly fine to run the rope in the other direction.
Here we have a common situation where we two straps we want to attach to with our upline.
Bring your new upline and run the bight both one straps. Pull the far enough through to have some with which to work.
Now pull the part of the rope between the two straps up away from the body to form a secondary bight. (The slack for this comes from the tail side so that you preserve the length of the primary bight.)
Change the direction of the tail so that it is also run over top of the straps. Put your fingers under the tail, then…
…under the lines of the secondary bight (3). If you need to add more length to your primary bight, you can pull it, and the rest of the rope should move through relatively easily.
Now lay the primary bight next to the others on your fingers. The bight and tail should be going in opposite directions, and all lines should be parallel to the secondary bight.
You will recognize this as the starting point for several common Single Columns. (Just as shown above in the 1-Point section.)
In this example, I will use my preferred approach, the Somerville Bowline.
Tighten it firmly.
As this is a non-collapsable Somerville Bowline, it is fine to use like this. That said, choose what you will do with the bight. (See “Options for the Bight” above).
Here the bight was long, so I chose to use up some of that with a Half Hitch…
…then run the tail through the bight to get it out of the way. This line is now ready to be run up to the hard point.
See “Tips or using a 2-Point hanger in a lift system” below for important usage information.
See the Other Angles section below to see this applied in different ways.
Attaching to two different points on the same strap
Here is a case where we want to connect to the same strap, but on opposite sides of the stem so that the hanger cannot slide around.
Again, just use a Single Column. The only difference is in how you run the wraps. In this case, run one on each side of the stem. Do your first wrap around one side…
…and your second wrap around the other side.
Now finish this off just as you would a 1-Point Hanger.
In this example, I will use the Somerville Bowline…
Choose what you will do with the bight. (See “Options for the Bight” above). Here I have chosen to lock it off.
This is ready to be run to the hard point.
Thus.
