3-Point Hanger from the side - Rope only
Run your new upline under each strap in sequence.
Pull primary bight through…
…far enough that you have some with which work.
Now pull the part of the rope between the closest two straps. Pull it up at least a handbreadth away from the body (more is also fine) to form a secondary bight.
Position the primary bight parallel to your new secondary bight.
Now pull up the rope between the next two straps to form another secondary bight.
Lay that new secondary bight on top of your fingers, next to the other lines already there.
Grab the tail.
Reverse its tension and lay it on top of your fingers next to the strands of the primary and secondary bights. The tail and bight should be running in opposite directions.
Complete the Somerville Bowline.
Make a loop around the bight with the tail [pictured], then [not pictured] run the bight around all the strands and through that loop again. The rope will run through the path where my middle finger and ring finger are in this picture. Tighten firmly.
It should look like this.
Choose what you will do with the bight. (See “Options for the Bight” above).
Here I have chosen to use up the long bight with a Half Hitch…
… and then run the tail through the bight to keep it out of the way. If the hanger does not put the same tension on each strand you can pull the inner lines of the hangers to adjust.
This line is now ready to be run up to the hard point.
