Fisherman's Knot

A fisherman's knot is used to semi-permanently join the ends of two ropes together.

Pros: Creates a good strong connection between two ropes of approximately the same diameter.

Cons (...or possibly Pros in this case...:) It will bind (be very difficult to undo), but that is kind of the point, so no worries.

Rope Needed

For this tutorial, I used two 30′ (~9m) piece of Natural and Blue 6mm provided by my affiliate Twisted Monk.

Prerequisites

Overhand Knots

Start with the ends of the rope you wish to join

With the first rope, tie a double overhand knot around the other rope, thus…

Continue to wrap the end around the rope

…and tuck it through both wraps

Tighten

Do the same thing with the other end

Pull the two lines together so that the over hand knots meet. Now pull very, very hard to lock down the fisherman’s knot. This will form a very secure join between the two ends of a knot.

This kind of knot, the fisherman’s bend, is subject to binding. Meaning that it will get very difficult to undo. But you typically only use this knot when you’re trying to semi-permanently join the ends of two ropes together so binding is ok. This is great to create the loops I use in the Prusik Anchor and the Redmayne Catch.
