Crossing Hitch (Munter Hitch or Nodome)

A Crossing Hitch, or Nodome (の止め), is used when you want to connect two cords that cross each other to keep them from sliding freely. This is a common approach used to improve the stability of many ties.

You will also commonly hear this called the "Munter Hitch", but the word "munter" is used as an insult in some parts of the world, so we are trying to move away from that name...

Straight forward or to the Left

If you want to connect one rope to another when they cross each other, first go over the rope

Then reverse tension and go under

Then go over itself

Then under the crossing rope again

Hence the procedure description: "over-under-over-under"

... This also works well if you want your rope to head off at an angle after connecting. One thing though:

To the Right

Always do your first tail pull on the side you want the rope to travel after it is connected.

...

Up to this point, it didn't matter which side you did the first tail pull on

But if you go off at an angle, doing your first tail pull on that same side will mean your Crossing Hitch has a much firmer grip on the crossing rope!
